Tanker Ablaze Off Oman Coast

(MENAFN) A vessel erupted in flames off the coast of Oman on Monday, sparking an urgent maritime emergency before Indian authorities confirmed that all 24 Indian crew members aboard had been accounted for and were unharmed.

Opesh Kumar Sharma, director at India's Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, identified the stricken vessel as the MT Marivex, placing the onset of the incident at approximately 1:30 pm local time (0800 GMT).

"Per available information, all Indian seafarers are presently safe," he said through US social media company X.

The Forward Seamen's Union of India had earlier sounded the alarm on X, issuing an urgent appeal for assistance on behalf of the 24 Indian seafarers stranded aboard the burning vessel.

The cause of the fire is under scrutiny. Citing maritime sources, media reported that a suspected drone or missile strike may have ignited the blaze, with the explosion tearing through the ship's engine room.

The Marivex — an oil and chemical tanker registered under the flag of Palau — was sailing in waters carrying acute geopolitical weight. Oman sits adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping artery currently under blockade and in close proximity to the freshly reignited hostilities between Iran and Israel.
